Big Little Lies season 2 finale debate: What’s the biggest question?

Big Little Lies

The Big Little Lies season 2 finale is coming up on HBO this weekend and throughout whatever lies ahead, we imagine that it’s going to be dramatic. Yet, does it actually have to be as dramatic as it is?

One of the things that we’re left to wonder as we near the final episode is one geared very much around crimes and punishment. Perry Wright, through much of life, punished and punished and punished some more. He was cruel, abusive, hurtful, and anything and everything in between. He operated on a currency of destruction that is hard to look away from.

When Perry died, he died as a form of what feels to be self-defense. That creates one of the larger issues of this season: Why is so much drama being extracted from a situation that could be otherwise resolved? Let’s say that Monterey Five got together to tell the truth. Bonnie got to tell her story and she had corroboration from everyone else. Would they be able to prove their case? There’s no guarantee of anything, but it feels like there would be a chance that everything would be washed away. Some of Bonnie’s trauma could be gone and instead, she could find herself feeling a larger sense of liberation.

As things are, however, she is finding herself more in a position where she has to look over her shoulder and she doesn’t seem able to breathe.

Why keep the secret?

Maybe this is the question that Big Little Lies is forcing us to confront. It’s not so much about consequences from the law as it is consequences from the community. It’s the change of perception that Bonnie is a killer and then, consequently, the others are friends with a killer. What does that do to their friends, their family, and their social circle? Are they viewed any differently? Would Madeline, Celeste, and others really be there for Bonnie if she confessed.

Big Little Lies is a show about truth, but it’s also a show about pride. If the world is going to be changed in the finale, it may be down to some of these characters to swallow some of said pride. We’ll see what shakes out when the finale airs tomorrow night.
