According to a new report coming in via SpoilerTV, there are going to be twenty episodes for the upcoming batch of episodes, a hefty increase versus what was originally ordered. Yet, if this news holds it would allow Legacies to have the same order as its lead-in in Supernatural, which means that for at least this year, The CW will have some consistency in their Thursday-night lineup. There will still be time on the other side of that to have alternative programming in the spring.
As for why The CW would want more of the Vampire Diaries/Originals spin-off show, the simplest answer to this is that it performs well. It may not be a huge ratings dynamo in terms of live viewership, but it has a sizable DVR/streaming audience and also sells well all over the world. All of the other shows in this vampire universe have been global hits and this show has a lot of natural value and staying power — it appeals to young viewers and nostalgic Vampire Diaries fans alike and it also established a creative evolution on what we had on any of the shows before it. This show still had a lot of danger in the first season, but there was some lightness and a sense of real imagination.
Legacies season 2 is going to premiere this fall — don’t expect any change to be coming in terms of the premiere date. There’s no reason to change that up! We expect even more news when it comes to the story ahead over the next few days, though it’s probably going to be many weeks still before we start to see more substantial footage … unless the producers have a few tricks up their sleeves.
