Emmys 2019 surprises: Gwendoline Christie, Schitt’s Creek, Succession

Succession season 1

What were some of the biggest surprises on the 2019 Emmys? We’re used to having a few snubs, but also some that give us a reason to smile. This article is all about pointing out some of the people who got a nod who we weren’t quite sure they would — and the same goes for some shows.

If you want to check out our thoughts on the Emmy nominations as well as the snubs then be sure to check out our reaction video and the bottom of this article. Remember to subscribe to the CarterMatt YouTube channel so you don’t miss out on any upcoming TV scoop!

Chris Sullivan, This Is Us – It’s nice to see the man behind Toby find a way to eke into the nominations, given that he’s often one of the more forgotten performers within the ensemble.

Schitt’s Creek – The amount of love given to the acclaimed-but-long-forgotten comedy comes as a total shock, but one that many in the TV community are likely thrilled to see.

Gwendoline Christie and Alfie Allen, Game of Thrones – There are a ton of nominations for the HBO epic but, in our mind, these are the two that we weren’t expecting. It’s almost like the Emmys are making up for some past mistakes.

Russian Doll – It’s far from the most well-known comedy, but it managed to be able to draw in a lot of love today.

Jared Harris – We loved him and thought he should be nominated for Chernobyl, but we’ve been long disappointed with how the Emmys don’t give him enough due.

Succession – While its cast may not be getting enough love, at least the overall series was able to score a Drama Series nod.

Nailed It! – The relatively unknown Netflix baking show managed to get a nom amidst a lot of series that get nominated a billion times over.

Domination by a few shows – This is probably the biggest general take that we’ve got this morning: For whatever reason, it feels like the vast majority of the nods are for either Game of Thrones, Killing Eve, Better Call Saul, When They See Us, Chernobyl, Fosse/Verdon, or The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Where’s the variety?

The lack of big surprises – By and large, this was a predictable year! With so few shows dominating, it was hard for any others to get a word in edgewise.
