Poldark season 5 episode 2 promo: Is George starting to fall apart?
As we prepare for Poldark season 5 episode 2 this weekend, what’s going to happen with George Warleggan? At this point, it’s clear that this is not the same George that we’ve come to see on the series so far. Not only is he still struggling with the grief of losing Elizabeth, but his brain is denying her departure. There will be a part of him that continues to think that she is standing right in front of him and the two are continuing the relationship as it once existed.
In the Poldark season 5 episode 2 promo that we have for you below, you can get a sense of some of that as Heida Reed returns in order to play this version of Elizabeth living within George’s memory palace. She’s stepping outside of those walls and into his perceived real world; the problem is that no one else can feel or see her. She’s just there for his audience only and the longer he continues to imagine her alive, the more troublesome this could be. Remember that George has built his whole empire on being formidable, on manipulation, and on making other people feel like he’s always one of the savviest in the role. This breaks down some of that facade where everyone can see something else.
So what does Jack Farthing think about this particular story for his character? As you would imagine, he is thrilled for the opportunity to take some of this stuff on. Speaking on this further, here is what the actor had to say in a new Metro interview:
“As an actor you’re desperate for a good story like that … It comes out of nowhere. I love the stuff that feels out of character. I didn’t want it to come easy, and not too much like he was fine.
“I played it very much like he was covering. He is busy working away but it’s avoidance. He can’t deal with Elizabeth’s face, her name. It’s jarring. It takes him off guard.”
Could this season make you actually sympathetic for George Warleggan? It’s a weird thing to consider, given how smarmy he is … but it also does feel possible.
