Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight on HBO? Return date
Here’s the bad news — let’s just go ahead and get that out of the way. There is no new episode of Last Week Tonight coming onto HBO on July 14, marking the second straight week in which the show is off the air. If you do want to see more of John, you can do soon by going and seeing The Lion King in just a handful of days. (Yes, we know that technically, you’ll be seeing Zazu the bird and not John — but it’s really John in the soul of the bird. That should be enough for the time being.
So when is Oliver’s show returning to HBO with more new episodes? Think in terms of Sunday, July 28 — two more weeks from tonight! That’s a long time still to go, especially since it’s been two weeks since we’ve seen him as-is. Yet, this is the longest hiatus of the season so far and while it always seems as though we’re missing some stuff when Oliver is gone, at least he will be around more to cover some of the Democratic debates a little bit later in the year.
In general, the 2020 election is something that we do want to see John slowly dip his toes into more, at least provided it doesn’t come at the expense of everything else. This is a part of the issue with being a comedian in 2019 — there are Trump-related headlines all around you and it, plus, the election, are the easiest common denominator. If that is all you focus on, you run the risk that this becomes your entire routine. You want to be know for several different things and for Oliver, a part of the job of his show comes in seeing him take on issues that other people have either ignored or are not presenting in the right way. He’s using humor to talk about things that are otherwise rather boring. It’s one of the most fantastic bait-and-switch usages ever.
