Earlier today in Paisley (located close to Glasgow), the most public filming for Outlander season 5 to date took place. For the better part of production this year, we’ve seen most stuff happen behind closed doors or in a well-guarded area. It’s a little bit harder to do that in a public place.
We’ve wondered ever since we first learned about Paisley and the road closures what Outlander could be doing there, but it seems to have less to do with anything on the streets and more to do with one landmark. (Note: We don’t want to share any big potential story spoilers ahead — Outlander works hard to avoid them! Yet, we will discuss the filming location itself since there is so much photographic evidence of it out there already.)
Caitriona Balfe was spotted today filming around a church in the location, and it seems as though that was the goal of being in the area in the first place. If you want to see photos of her, a simple Twitter search will suffice — but be mindful of possible spoilers to go along with that. Caitriona was also kind enough to take a number of photos with fans, which she probably expected in advance. Given how rare filming for season 5 is in public locations, it generated many headlines when the closures were first revealed!

Given where Outlander is right now in production, we would expect these scenes featuring Caitriona to be featured somewhere around the middle portion of the show’s run. Sometimes, things do get filmed out of order, but rarely in an extreme way. (For example, the show wouldn’t film a scene for the finale, at least the majority of the time, in the middle of production.)
This has shown itself to be quite the busy past couple of days for Caitriona, especially since she was recently spotted at an Audi event earlier this weekend in England. Odds are, she took part in that event, made a beeline back north to Scotland, and then had to wake up early and prepare for filming. The objective for Outlander was to get their work done before it got too late in the day and then move forward.
