Grantchester season 5 renewal official over at ITV, PBS
Today, it was announced that the British series, which serves both as a wonderful mystery and also period drama, will be coming back in the new year. The timing of the renewal comes mere days before its season 4 premiere on PBS as a part of its Masterpiece imprint. That is when viewers in America will get a chance to begin the farewell tour for James Norton as Sidney, but then also prepare to meet Tom Brittney as Will Davenport, a new character who we feel you will come to like rather quickly. He brings a different energy to his vicar character but remains someone who is very much entertaining.
In a statement, show executive producer Emma Kingsman-Lloyd had the following to say about the great news:
“We are very excited that Grantchester is returning for a fifth series. The audience has taken the pairing of Robson Green and Tom Brittney to their hearts and we are delighted to be able to continue the story of Geordie and Will with Masterpiece and ITV.”
Filming for Grantchester season 5 will be taking place this summer, and we imagine that there will be some more casting news interspersed throughout the coming weeks. The hope is to present some more stories that make you think both about the small community that these characters call home, but also the relationship that these people have to religion. This is a heartfelt series that often has its heart in the right place.
With the show’s premise, we also do think that this is the sort of series that could last however long the ratings are there and the creative team want to tell more stories. It’s a little bit similar to Call the Midwife in that way and that show already has been renewed for several seasons.
For those wondering, Brittney will return in the role of Will Davenport moving forward. Without giving anything away, season 4 will set the stage for him staying put.
