Euphoria renewed for season 2 by HBO after strong start

Euphoria season 1 Rue

It felt as though a Euphoria season 2 renewal would be coming any day now — as it turns out, that day just so happens to be today.

In a new statement today, HBO’s executive vice-president of programming Francesca Orsi made it clear that they are bringing their topical Zendaya-led drama series back for more. This move comes just a handful of episodes into the series’ run, and also after it has received a great deal of attention from critics and viewers alike.

Here is more of what Orsi had to say in particular about the move:

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson has built an incredible world with an extraordinary cast led by the supremely talented Zendaya. We are so grateful that he chose HBO as the home for this groundbreaking series … We look forward to following these complex characters as their journeys continue through the challenging world they inhabit.”

This announcement comes after Euphoria episode 4 drew more than 600,000 total viewers, the largest number that we’ve had a chance to see yet for the show in terms of live ratings. These numbers increase significantly when you factor in both DVR views and On-Demand/internet streats. Because this is a show with so young of a fan base, a significant chunk of its viewership is coming from those who choose to watch the show in non-traditional ways.

The first season, slated to run eight episodes, will wrap up this August. We don’t personally think that HBO will want to wait too long for a season 2 of Euphoria to premiere, but a lot of that could be tied to Levinson’s ability to get the best story together and also the availability of Zendaya and the rest of the cast. She managed to balance out this show with Spider-Man: Far from Home and that’s an encouraging sign when it comes to her flexibility schedule-wise.

What do you think about Euphoria being renewed for a season 2?
