The Affair season 5 poster: Noah, Helen, and ghosts of past and present
To see the two in front of the water comes as no surprise. Water has long been a signal of life and death within this show, and its emotional significance will probably crash its way into every episode. We’re just coming off of Allison’s death, and there’s still no clear indication that closure is coming on that subject.

Now, let’s talk about all of the figures in the back of Noah and Helen — who are they supposed to be? It looks like a mixture of people, whether it be adults, kids, men, or women. With the tagline for the final season being “where does it end,” the safest assumption to make is that these are people whose lives have been impacted by everything that has happened since the start of the series. The relationships and the destruction at the heart of The Affair are not linear. What happened with Noah, Helen, Cole, and Allison was not only centered around them — it hit others and it hit others hard. To go along with that, it’s also going to continue to play a part in the future. That’s where some of those flash-forwards come around this season, the ones that feature a much older version of Joanie decades in the future, still trying to get a sense of Allison. In a lot of ways, the actions of the series’ core characters remain with her as an adult and she will try to do what she can in order to move past them … only to realize that doing so is not so easy.
