Outlander notes: New Sam Heughan video; Sophie Skelton & Adso

Outlander season 4

Happy Fourth of July to everyone celebrating within the Outlander universe! It feels appropriate to celebrate this holiday with season 5 approaching, as American Independence is going to be a key part of this season. We’re not at the Revolutionary War just yet within the story but it is coming up on the horizon.

This edition of CarterMatt Outlander notes isn’t so much about the story of the show — it’s instead about sharing a meaningful Sam Heughan video plus the latest behind-the-scenes photos of Sophie Skelton alongside one of season 5’s most notable new additions: Adso the cat.

Let’s kick things off here with Sam Heughan – As you may be aware, yesterday the actor behind Jamie Fraser was handed an honorary doctorate by the Dumfries campus of the University of Glasgow. As Sam spent the early years of his childhood in the region, it’s a part of Scotland that holds a great deal of significance in his heart. He notes in the new video HERE (posted by the university) that even though he doesn’t get to come home all that often, it does bear a lot of heartfelt significance to him. It’s a homecoming and given that actors are often so nomadic (it’s the nature of the business), there’s something special about having roots somewhere. In a lot of ways, Sam is lucky to be as settled as he is, getting to work in Scotland for most of the year when so many actors often are forced to work hundreds of miles away from where they grew up.

Now, Sophie Skelton and Adso

Someone must’ve told Sophie that cat photos are a way to win the internet; after all, she posted a couple of different ones on her Instagram!

As book readers of The Fiery Cross know, Adso is a cat who becomes important for Claire’s surgical practice; if nothing else, they’re able to ensure that mice and other animals steer clear of what Claire is trying to do. It’s also nice to have another mascot-of-sorts within the Outlander world, given that Rollo’s return is very much undetermined. That will be dependent on whenever John Bell gets to come back as Young Ian — we expect it to happen at some point, but the show realizes that bringing him back immediately after his decision to stay with the Mohawk invalidates that twist.
