The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 episode 8 preview: Is June falling apart?

The Handmaid's Tale season 3

Will June recover during The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 episode 8 next week? It’s hard to feel confident that the road is getting any easier for her. As a matter of fact, you can argue that she is struggling with more instability and pain than ever before and that’s saying something considering everything we’ve seen her go through.

Below, CarterMatt has the promo for the next new episode for you and it’s called “Unfit”. There’s still rage within June over everything that just transpired with Hannah. She learned in episode 7 that she has been moved, and she personally blames Frances for what happened. This entire sequence of events is leading to an emotional unraveling, one where she has to struggle with the notion of what she chose to do and also how she grapples with whatever her future could be. A lot of the problem here may just be that June put forth so much in her plan to see Hannah that when it ended in such an unexpected fashion, it was an emotional weight that just dragged her to the ground.

Throughout the next new episode, there will be a chance to see if recovery is really possible and if there can be a balancing of powers within this world. It’s going to be hard for The Handmaid’s Tale to really top the hanging sequence from this week’s episode in terms of dramatic effect — that was cold, that was violent, and it showcased how June may feel as though there is no light at the end of the tunnel anymore. (Not that there was ever a lot here to begin with.)

If you do want to get some more insight on tonight’s episode, including those fateful scenes around the noose, the video below also contains some insight into what made them so difficult. There was the challenge of nailing the emotion of the scene, but then also having to film outside, in the bitter cold (We grew up in Toronto and can tell you that it is not warm in the winter!), trying to find a way to properly nail what June was feeling — betrayal, and maybe even the onset of madness. When you’re fighting for someone you care about like a son or a daughter, you’ll do anything; then, when something happens that keeps you away from them, you feel emotions like you’ve never felt before. Based on what we’re seeing in this video, this is exactly where June is at emotionally within this episode.
