Ink Master interview: Big Jaz on elimination, fellow contestants, versatility

Big Jaz

We’ve been without Big Jaz for just one episode of Ink Master season 12 and we already can’t help but miss him. He was one of the most experienced artists this season, he had a big personality, and he seemed to be one of those people who was genuinely loved by everyone in the competition. His elimination came as a surprise, especially since he’s the sort of versatile artist who often does well on this competition. One of the things he struggled with was completely out of his control: A human canvas who couldn’t sit still.

So how is Jaz feeling about everything after the fact, including tattooing in this competition versus doing so in his typical environment? Check out this CarterMatt exit interview below for some of his thoughts.

CarterMatt – How did you get along with everyone in the house? It seemed like people from both teams really loved you.

Big Jaz – From my perspective, everyone was cool and very nice. It was encouraging that everyone involved was willing to learn from each other.

Were you surprised to be sent home for your surrealistic tattoo?

I was very surprised to be sent home. I felt that I did a great job on my tattoo and did not expect to go home for it.

It seemed like the moment you got that particular canvas and she couldn’t sit still, you were in a bad spot. Is there anything different you could’ve done?

Everything went fine, as soon as she stopped moving she sat as well as she could so no, I don’t think anything could have been done different.

As someone who’s been tattooing for so long, what was the biggest difference between doing it in a shop and this show?

The biggest thing is there are no cameras in my shop! When I’m working with a client, there is not a set time limit and we are able to take multiple breaks as needed – and listen to music.

Was the Ink Master experience what you thought it would be?

I thought it would be more challenging, I felt like I was able to handle what was thrown at me which is why I was surprised I went home when I did.

Is there anything else about your artwork that you wish you had a chance to show off?

Certainly! I have plenty of styles up my sleeve and wish I could have displayed all of them on the show. I do post my work on Instagram (@bigdaddyjaz) so take a look if you want to see more of what I can do.

How can people find you to get a tattoo?

You can find me at my shop Electric Gorilla Tattoo in Brooklyn, NY.
