Is In the Dark renewed for season 2, canceled? Premiere date hopes
The good news is that there’s no cause for concern — In the Dark has been renewed for a season 2, and there’s going to be a chance to see more new episodes coming during the 2019-20 season. As for when these episodes are coming, there is nothing official as of yet from The CW. They haven’t announced a return date and they may not for several months. Because the show is not on their fall schedule, they don’t have as much of a reason to hurry an announcement. (Odds are, you’re looking at a spring 2020 launch.)
As for why The CW chose to renew it, brand consistency may be a big reason. Studio ownership is another. The CW is recognizing that streaming/DVR viewership are equally important to live ratings, at least for their own business model. In the Dark is a show that can build up viewers after the fact once more people are aware of it. For at least one more season, they’re willing to take the chance that people find a way to discover it. The aforementioned studio connection, with it hailing from CBS Television Studios, is also important. The CW likes to have shows from both Warner Bros. TV and then also CBS, and In the Dark satisfied the latter. (Most of their bigger hits come from Warner Bros. and these tend to be the more stable of their shows.)
If you want to see In the Dark build on itself and get a season 3, our advice is simple: Recommend it to your friends over the next several months, and be sure to come back yourself. Because this show is facing a long hiatus, it is going to be easy to forget about it in the interim. That cannot happen – it needs viewers and it cannot afford to lose any. The CW does love to give its shows second and at times third chances, but it has limitations and this is one of their worst-performing shows on-schedule.
