When does Supergirl season 5 start filming? Melissa Benoist’s tease
In a new post on Instagram (see below), series star Melissa Benoist teased the start of production in Vancouver. Filming is slated to begin tomorrow, which makes for a surprising start. It’s earlier than past seasons have kicked off production, and the same can be said for all of the Arrowverse in general. The tradition tends to be that these series start filming in early July.
So why is filming starting so early? Maybe it is a function of Supergirl being one of the first shows to premiere this fall on The CW along with Batwoman, or maybe this is just the schedule that works best for the cast and crew. It holds no real bearing on what is coming up with the story of the season. Kara Danvers acts independently of when Benoist, Chyler Leigh, and the rest of the cast is on set.
The priority for season 5 should be establishing the aftereffects of Lex Luthor’s actions and the rise of Leviathan. This organization was teased at the end of season 4, and because they’re not so well-known as a Lex or even a Reign, the writers have more freedom to mold them into what they choose. This is going to be a very different season from what we just saw. Season 4 was topical and relevant to the world today, with its Agent Liberty storyline and its message about characters trying to fight through hate and trying to discover the light within. Season 5 should contain an essence of that while still working to discover its own identity.
Then, there’s also Crisis on Infinite Earths
No matter what Supergirl or other shows within the Arrowverse are trying to do, this crossover is still sitting there on its shoulder. This is the most ambitious superhero event perhaps ever on TV, spanning numerous editions of the Arrowverse including even Legends of Tomorrow, which isn’t even going to air until early next year. The objective within this will be setting the stage for an epic showdown for the fate of multiverse … and then also hoping that Supergirl and some other characters don’t die in the process.
Expect an action-packed, eventful crossover event that pairs up unique characters and features a powerful villain. The crossover will kick off with its first run of episodes near the end of the year. Supergirl has to set up its individual storylines with that in mind; it shouldn’t short-change itself for the sake of Crisis on Infinite Earths , but there should be a recognition that at some point, it will need to take a quick break to tell a different story.
