Outlander season 5 not coming to San Diego Comic-Con 2019; here’s why

Outlander season 4If you were hoping to see Outlander at San Diego Comic-Con later this summer, we have some unfortunate news to pass along.

In a post on Twitter, Starz’s PR account confirmed something that we saw coming for a while now: There is no physical panel in the form of a panel. The show will be featured within the Starz booth. We imagine there will be a chance for fans to take photos with a couple of various things associated with the show — or at least that’s what we are hoping for.

We understand why the show’s not going to be there — it wasn’t present at SDCC last year, as Starz opted to do a New York Comic-Con event instead. In all honesty, we’d be surprised if it is there this year, either, as filming will likely be going on still for the fifth season. Booking talent for Comic-Con and other conventions is not easy, and it can be pricey to fly in the talent and arrange everything and get the convention space. That’s why most studios/networks don’t bring shows there if they aren’t premiering in the months immediately after it. For example, Warner Bros. isn’t bringing Legends of Tomorrow this year because it’s not coming out until 2020 — and that’s a comic-book show! That’s one of the shows you would think would just be at the convention by default.

So what do we want to happen?

We’ll admit that in some ways, it’s a selfish request because it’s right in our neck of the woods — but we think an Outlander panel at WonderCon next year in Anaheim would be perfect. It’s owned by the same people as SDCC, it’s an enormous convention, and many shows come out and do official panels here already. It’s also held in the spring, which is around when this show would, most likely, be airing on Starz. That just makes the most sense and it could easily be one of the headlining panels at that convention.

For now, we hope that the cast continues to have a great time working on season 5 and delivering the best episodes possible. They’ve already had to travel all the way to California once already for the Emmy panel — we understand that trying to do so again would be exhausting, and Starz probably doesn’t see the merit when the show’s not coming back for months.

There will be opportunities for Outlander to shine again at various panels; alas, we’re just going to have to wait for a while in order to see it.
