Criminal Minds’ Adam Rodriguez, Shadowhunters actor join Penny Dreadful follow-up
With Criminal Minds season 15, (and the series as a whole) being done with production, we knew that some actors were going to be moving forward towards other projects. We’ve now gotten a good sense as to what that’s going to look like for Adam Rodriguez.
Per a report from Deadline, Rodriguez is one of many actors officially joining Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, the continuation for the Showtime franchise that first began years ago. Given how awesome the original version of the show was (one of our favorite shows!), we’re still holding out hope that this can live up to that since it’s an insanely high bar to reach. Hopefully, bringing on board someone of Adam’s caliber and more could help with that.
In order to understand who Rodriguez is playing, you’re going to need some additional information on the story itself. Check out the official logline that CarterMatt has for you below:
A spiritual descendant of the story set in Victorian-era London, the next chapter will employ a new vision, new characters and storylines. It opens in 1938 Los Angeles; a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.
Rodriguez is going to be playing Raul Vega, the oldest son within the Vega family and someone who both fights for his people and his union. If that doesn’t make you excited, know that Shadowhunters actor Dominic Sherwood is going to be on board the show as well, playing the part of Kurt, a chauffeur and bodyguard for Thomas Kretschmann’s character of Richard Goss. Star Trek: Discovery actor Ethan Peck will be playing the character of Herman Ackermann, the charismatic second-in-command at the German-American Bund. If you didn’t know, this group will be led by Peter Craft, a character played by former Penny Dreadful actor Rory Kinnear — otherwise known as one of the most incredible actors on the planet. If you haven’t seen him in the original Penny Dreadful or in the first episode of Black Mirror, we highly recommend you check out his other work.
What makes this spin-off special?
The cast obviously helps, and that’s without even mentioning the already-announced addition of Natalie Dormer to the cast. The idea here is going to be bringing out traditional Latin mythology and applying the signature Penny Dreadful stamp to it. Our hope is that there’s a lot of mystery here, and that every actor at least gets a few moments to shine. A season of Penny Dreadful is going to be shorter than one of Criminal Minds or Shadowhunters; we imagine that a lot of the appeal here is going to be getting to do something that looks and feels so different from what Rodriguez and Sherwood have done before.
There’s no premiere date as of yet for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels — once there’s more information out there, we’ll have it for you here.
