Designated Survivor season 4 hopes: Tom Kirkman’s (possible) future
Obviously, the jury is still out on a Designated Survivor season 4 and to keep this legal metaphor going for a little while longer, we’re not sure that a verdict will be coming over the next few weeks. Because of that, why not spend some of this interim time discussing what could be coming for some of these characters?
It’s obvious that Tom Kirkman is the right starting-off point here — as a matter of fact, there is really no other direction we could go with this! He’s the vocal point, Kiefer Sutherland’s #1 on the call sheet, and the majority of the series revolves around him in some way. Even though we just went through a long and intense election, there is still so much left to explore on the other side.
1. Will the secret come out about what Moss knew? – It’s a fascinating thing to think about, but in our mind, we don’t think anyone else is going to spill the beans on the man. Instead, we think more of the larger mystery here is going to revolve around whether or not Kirkman will admit himself that he withheld information from the American people — becoming the very person he claimed previously to hate. We want it to eat away at him, and we mean that even if the truth never ends up coming out at all.
2. Will we see more of Kirkman as a father? – We kind of hope so, given that this part of his life felt very much at arm’s length during much of season 3. It felt like a necessary consequence of both the campaign and Netflix only giving the show ten episodes, but with that election done, there is a lot to explore here — including the idea that his daughter has changed without him around and he has to emotionally contend with that.
3. What’s going to be his relationship with Congress? – Politically, there’s something so fascinating about all of the various deal-making that can be done here. It makes up such a large amount of actual headlines within the world, and there is certainly some room for Designated Survivor as a series to dive in and swim around a little bit.
4. Is it time for a new love interest? – We’d argue that it could be, given that it’s been enough time now since Alex Kirkman’s death that the show could explore this a little bit. The real excitement in it for us as a viewer is pretty simple: What would it look like for POTUS to be dating someone, and how exactly do you tackle that? You want it to be realistic and not cheesy or over-the-top. A lot of it would depend on finding the right person.
