Doctor Who season 12: Jodie Whittaker makes a splash with birthday outfit

Doctor Who season 12 is going to be premiering on BBC One and BBC America in the new year … but that doesn’t mean you have to wait to see one of the most endearing on-set moments in quite some time.

In a new post on Twitter, series star Mandip Gill shared an image of what series star Jodie Whittaker chose to wear on set in honor of her birthday this week. You’ve got a crown with crayons, a giant button reading “birthday girl,” and then also a ribbon and a shiny silver dress. There is a part of us that really wishes this is all part of an actual Doctor Who episode, even though that’s unlikely. Let’s just put things this way — do you think the BBC would let the cast spoil some sort of season 12 costume so early?

Production at the new season as been underway for many weeks now and while there are many secrets still out there, what we know is that it is set to be a little bit more nostalgic than what we saw in season 11. That season took more creative swings as new showrunner Chris Chibnall looked to put his own creative stamp on the show. Moving into season 12, we think that the idea now is to play around more with established characters. Doctor Who has already shown that it can play around in new waters. Now, there is an opportunity to showcase everything else that they can do when it comes to some storylines that are a little more familiar to longtime fans.

Our hope, at present, is that Doctor Who finds a way to combine the best of all the worlds that constitute the show — you can deliver a hefty dose of nostalgia while at the same time also come up with new and creative ideas. Continue to test and stretch the imagination of some of your viewers! The bad thing is just how long we’re going to have to wait in order to find some more information on this particular subject. Because the wait is so long, we’ll be lucky if the BBC drops many major announcements at any point between now and a little bit later in the year. There’s just no real reason for them to hurry things along and there is certainly no reason for them to release any footage until late this year at the earliest.

Until then, let’s just cross our fingers and hope that there will be some opportunities to see more fun antics from the cast on set … whenever they are allowed to share a few more teasers, at least. At this point, we are firmly in “take whatever we can get mode.” It’s pretty hard not to be.
