Agents of SHIELD season 6: Elizabeth Henstridge on FitzSimmons reunion
If you just think about the idea of Fitz and Simmons reuniting on the surface, we’re sure that it feels like it should cause a great deal of fanfare. It’s a reunion! These are characters who have been apart from each other for a significant amount of time now, and it’s not exactly as though they’ve been able to pick up a phone and communicate about the day. There are a lot of things that they need to have conversations on, and the two of them on some level are different people from when they last saw each other. There’s so much good stuff in here, but then there’s also a lot of pain, a lot of darkness. You see them through their best times in their worst in this episode, and you also get the season across a number of different eras of their lives. There’s a lot that’s crammed in here, and it could end up painting one of the most beautiful pictures we’ve seen on Agents of SHIELD to date.
If nothing else, we certainly know that Elizabeth Henstridge is very excited about what people are going to be seeing. Speaking via TVLine, here is some of what she had to say:
“…You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll need to call your Mom…. As much as we know these characters and as long as they have been around, I think you learn something new about them. We get to see how they met, where they were both at and what they were thinking…. We also get to experience a darker side of Simmons we haven’t seen before, which was cool.
“It’s a very ambitious episode. Reading it, I loved it, but it was definitely a mountain to climb. But with Jesse Bochco as director, I knew we were in good hands. And we didit. We made something that we can be really proud of. As an actor, it’s a dream to play a few different versions of yourself, to discover things about [Jemma], especially after six years. I don’t know how the writers do it, but they do, and I love it.”

Henstridge also adds in this interview that there was a sense of freedom and excitement going into season 6 to begin with. A lot of the cast and crew were prepared for season 5 to potentially be the end of the road, given the show’s performance and having to air on Friday night for such a long period of time. Season 6 came as almost a blessing as a result of that, and it gives the entire team opportunity to maybe try things that they wouldn’t be willing to do otherwise.
The extent of the writers’ creativity to date has made the show pretty incredible, but we certainly have question marks as to how it’s all going to end. Also, it would just be nice to see everyone in one place again before the finale. Is that too much to ask?
