Yellowstone renewed for season 3 (already!) by Paramount Network
Apparently, the folks over at the Paramount Network are so happy with Yellowstone season 2, they don’t need to see any ratings. They’re already prepared to give it a green light for a season 3.
Today, the network confirmed their early renewal, mere hours before the show returns with new episodes. It’s a move that shows a tremendous amount of faith in what became one of the biggest runaway hits of the entire summer last year. The first season drew, on average, a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and more than 2.2 million live viewers weekly — these numbers expanded outward with DVR viewership, and we have a feeling that there could be a further expansion seen tonight. Viewers have had an opportunity over the past several months to check out season 1, if they didn’t have an opportunity to view it live when it first aired.
The thing about Yellowstone is that it really does feel as though the sky is the limit with this show. Paramount Network isn’t a place that a lot of viewers are familiar with just yet, and as more people find it, they’ll start to peruse its programming even more. Also, this show has a top-tier star in Kevin Costner who has generations of fans. He is one of the initial draws for this series, alongside its modern Western feel. The show combines some classic motifs with the family drama and intrigue of a Dallas or a Dynasty. Visually, it’s also stunning and it brings viewers to a very different part of the world — one that does still exist, even if it’s not something that the majority of people tend to think about anymore.
Given the timing of the early season 3 renewal, we imagine that the plan is for Yellowstone to return at some point in the summer of 2020. We’ll understand the temptation to put more of the show on the air faster, but this is really the proper time to make it happen. You don’t want to air it too early; instead, you want to just find a way to keep flourishing at a time when there isn’t all that much competition out there and summer is a time where we are all starved for shows since the landscape is pretty dry.
We’ll have more news on Yellowstone season 3 as it comes around, but there’s no hurry to look towards it when we still got all of season 2 to talk about! There’s a lot of drama a-comin’ for the Duttons this summer, and we’ll be around to chronicle all of that, plus some previews for what is coming up next.
