The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 episode 6 preview: What’s next for June?

The Handmaid's Tale season 3

Next week on The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 episode 6, prayer videos will be key to the story — but so is dealing with heartache. With Nicole away, June has to figure out how to make some tough decisions. One of the biggest ones is simply this: Can Luke keep Nicole in Canada? Is there a way in which to prove that the baby is not Commander Waterford’s?

As we move forward through the rest of the season, we imagine that you’re going to see more in terms of communication struggles. During episode 5, we had an opportunity to see June find a way to properly relay a message to Luke,  even if what she said puts any sort of barrier between her and Luke, that’s a chance she’s willing to take for what she wants for her baby. June’s desperation to figure out a way to get through to him was critical. Now, she wants Nicole to stay far away — or at the very least, she thinks that this is what is best. This is representative of what June thinks is right rather than what she may personally want. This is her acknowledgment of the dangerous world around her, and then also recognizing the chaos that is coming from what Serena now wants.

The video below features some of the cast and crew talking about Serena’s own earth-shattering revelations as to how she cares for this baby, even if it is not really hers. She’s convinced that it is and that convincing, that self-belief is all that matters to her. We will see in episode 6 a dichotomy of her own beliefs to that of June and Luke and how they will fight to make sure they get what they want. While there are larger stakes and video messages at play here, we do ultimately think that a lot of the story is singular and emotional. This is where the success of this show truly lies. It’s not always about a larger-scale dystopian society; it’s about the people. These are the characters we’re invested in and these are the stories we’re going to continue watching and appreciating at just about every step.

June’s struggle at the moment is heartbreaking, and it’s probably not going to get any easier. She and Luke are fighting what feels like a losing battle, and an entire institution that has so much accumulated power. When they can control the narrative and June has no real control at all, it’s either submit or suffer the consequences. Luckily, June seems prepared for anything.
