Grand Hotel episode 2 preview: The trouble that lies ahead

Grand Hotel

Following tonight’s big premiere, where will the story of ABC’s Grand Hotel take the cast? Likely in some absurd, crazy, and dramatic directions. This is a show that seems to be very much in the vein of a lot of great dramedies that came before it, whether you are talking about Desperate Housewives, Devious Maids, or Jane the Virgin. This show feels like it is borrowing the DNA from all of them as it looks to tell a story about (fittingly) a grand hotel. The thing is though, behind the scenes it may not be anywhere near as grand. There are some clear problems that will present themselves, whether you are talking about incidents between the guests, money, or battles over control.

Basically, the hotel is the empire within this show — it’s almost the Iron Throne and there will be battles both over it and battles around it. Part of the fun of this series will be seeing how some of these characters adjust to their surroundings.

In episode 2, we’re already going to be seeing the hotel in peril, which really does say something in terms of how this show is looking to get big and bold with some of its stories. There isn’t any messing around and we think that all of Grand Hotel is probably going to be better for it. For some more news in terms of what’s coming, just take a look at the synopsis that CarterMatt has for you below:

Gigi attempts to step in to save the hotel after El Rey’s performance gets out of control. Meanwhile, Danny’s cover is blown by one of the hotel staffers; and Ingrid’s deception forces Javi to step up and take responsibility for his actions.

What should ABC expect from Grand Hotel?

We’re hoping that this is a show that can at least post a 0.6 or 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic for them, especially since it’s one that feels like a perfect compliment to The Bachelorette. Tonally, it seems like a perfect match to the reality dating show — both are juicy and stuffed full of drama. We know that ABC is using a Bachelor in Paradise cast announcement in order to try and get some more attention to Grand Hotel tonight. The thing we question is premiering it after a Bachelorette episode that looks like it’s going to be stuffed full of filler. Wasn’t there a better way to time this out?

No matter what the specific ratings are, we just hope that Grand Hotel is enough of a hit that ABC considers keeping the show around for longer than a single season. In between shows like Take Two and Still Star-Crossed, the network has been struggling to find scripted programming in the summer that actually creates a significant splash. This could be it — let’s hope those Grand Hotel doors continue to welcome you in for some time.
