Big Little Lies season 2: Alexander Skarsgard on Perry’s return

Big Little Lies season 2 may not have Perry Wright alive in the present, but Alexander Skarsgard’s character is still very much present. We’re seeing the character via flashbacks, and are in the process of understanding more of why he was the way that he was. An abusive present doesn’t usually come out of nowhere, and there are often a few different events and actions that lead someone towards exhibiting some of these behavior patterns.

So, with that in mind, expect so much more from Skarsgard as season 2 moves along. Speaking on that subject via The Hollywood Reporter recently, Alexander has the following to say on the subject:

“There’s more to Perry’s backstory in season two … You understand his relationship with his mother and what he went through as a kid. And it explains a bit more about how he ended up in this really dark place and with those violent characteristics.”

It doesn’t seem like it was some arduous decision for Skarsgard to come back, even with a smaller amount of screen time this season. This is a show that brought him more critical acclaim than almost any other job that he’s ever had. He explains that it was the talent, the challenge, and the material that ultimately brought him to the decision that coming back was a fantastic opportunity for him:

“What an extraordinary opportunity to work on a character with so much depth and complexity and being surrounded by some of the finest actors in Hollywood — not only amazing actors, but amazing people … It’s such a lovely, supportive group. That season one on set was intense. It was tough. But when you do that with people you genuinely love, it’s so rewarding.”

Since we know how Perry’s story is going to end, we have a hard time really focusing too much with the flashbacks. Instead, the primary focus we have moving forward is with his mother Mary Louise. Meryl Streep’s character is currently on the hunt for answers, and we predict that throughout the rest of the second season, she’s going to use just about every form of manipulation she can in order to extract some answers. That may even include taking advantage of personal vulnerabilities — she knows that some of the Monterey Five are struggling, even if they aren’t vocalizing it in the most explicit way.
