The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 episode 5 preview: ‘Unknown Caller’

The Handmaid's Tale season 3

Next week on The Handmaid’s Taleseason 3 episode 5 will carry with it revelations … perhaps ones that change everything. This episode will place June in a difficult, uncomfortable position. She’s going to receive an offer when it comes to Nichole, and it’s one that could put her at the center of a new arrangement with Serena. There could be something that comes her way on the other side of that. Unfortunately, nothing is altogether guaranteed with that — we don’t think that this is a world in which trust can be necessarily earned.

What we know about where we are right now is this: June is intent on more freedom, there could be pushback, and that the show is continuing to find more and more unique ways to evolve. Given that it’s three seasons in now, some of that new-show feeling is starting to fade. It no longer has that buzz that makes it feel different and because of that, it has to find a different sort of way to stand out. That’s dependent on the performances and the twists that come about in the story — and we’ve already seen plenty. To be specific, we just saw Lydia amidst a downward spiral in what was one of the crazier storylines we’ve seen for this character as of late.

For some more news, check out the official The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 episode 5 (“Unknown Caller”) synopsis right now:

June and Serena grapple with a new revelation about Nichole, leading to an incident that will have far-reaching ramifications.

The promo below gives you a little more of a sense of what’s coming with June and Serena, but it also takes a look back at some of what happened in season 3 episode 4 — that includes all of the powerful stuff that happened with those two characters and then some of the breathtaking visuals that we saw. There is also a discussion of some of the “overreaction” from Aunt Lydia, who remains both terrible and then also completely compelling. She is someone who you can’t look away from, even if you really want to do so.

The most challenging thing about the next few days actually has nothing to do with the show itself — instead, it revolves more around having to wait in order to see it. After we got the first few episodes of the season all at once, the sense of pacing we’ve got in our head is suddenly thrown off!
