Lucifer renewed for season 5 at Netflix; will be final season

Lucifer

There is some good news when it comes to the future of Lucifer … but also some bittersweet news to go along with it.

Today, Netflix first confirmed that they are bringing back the Tom Ellis series for another batch of episodes at the streaming service; yet, it’s also clear (via TVLine) that it will be the final batch of episodes. This is the part of the story that shocks us somewhat, given that we had hoped for at least a season 6. While we recognized that this was not a show that would go on forever (few do at Netflix), our hope was that it could have as many seasons there as Fox.

Nonetheless, it’s great to know that there is a chance for the series to have a proper ending, as opposed to one that just falls flat — also, season 4 was awesome. There’s no reason to think that the writers/showrunners won’t be able to bring more incredible content to the table soon.

In a statement (per the aforementioned publication), executive producers Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich had the following to say:

“We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms … Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support. The best is yet to come!”

There is no news as of yet on the episode count, so it’s possible in theory that maybe the show will have more than ten installments to finish things off … we’re just hoping that there is at least ten in order to ensure that the writers have plenty of time. Season 4, after all, ended with an incredible cliffhanger, with Chloe realizing that she loves Lucifer while also watching him head to hell. Obviously, he’s not going to stay there forever (the show would be rather uneventful if he did), but we do still have all sorts of questions surrounding when he comes back and, of course, how he comes back and interacts with everyone once more. We’re hoping for some comedy, some dark/creepy stories, and some surprises … but above all else a lot of heart. That’s what has enabled Lucifer to really stand apart in the midst of a lot of the different preconceived notions that people had about it prior to it premiering. It’s so much more than a lot of naysayers ever thought — the writers and the cast are nothing short of fantastic.

Our official renewal/cancellation guide has been updated with the news that Lucifer is ending.
