Will Fear the Walking Dead season 5 reverse a ratings trend?

Fear the Walking Dead

Fear The Walking Dead season 5 is going to be premiering on AMC this Sunday, so what exactly should we expect?

For the sake of this article, our primary focus is on the show’s ratings. Fear the Walking Dead first premiered to some pretty massive numbers years ago, not that it should surprise really anybody. We are talking about an offshoot to one of the most successful franchises in recent television history! The Walking Dead has been a ratings wrecking ball for the majority of its run.

However, much like The Walking Dead proper, Fear The Walking Dead has been subject to a lot of decline over the past few years. Its ratings have dropped from year to year, and this past batch of episodes witnessed the lowest rating so far. We are talking about a show that averaged as a whole a 0.8 rating in the 18 to 49 demographic, and then also just over two million viewers an episode. When you compare these to other cable ratings for AMC or any other network, it’s not actually that bad. Fear The Walking Dead fares reasonably well, and seems to have a solid audience.

Yet, more and more viewers are shifting away from live television these days, and you can easily argue at this point that Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead itself are somewhat oversaturated — they’ve been all over the market for so long that the enthusiasm is not the same. Because of this, we are keeping our expectations for the new batch of episode fairly low. If Fear The Walking Dead is able to average of 0.7 rating in the demo and close to 5 million viewers an episode, it’s hard to imagine AMC is going to be altogether upset about that. This is a show that has made a number of somewhat controversial decisions, after all, and some of those may have scared some folks away. We know that very few people are happy with what they did in terms of Madison, and it may take some time to win some of them back over after that. (Yes, we do realize that it has been a good while since Kim Dickens actually departed the show.)

For now, we’re going to go ahead and say that Fear The Walking Dead will get a season 6 on the other side of this current one. It’s just crazy to think otherwise! AMC has poured truckloads of money into this entire franchise, so stopping it now would look like a colossal failure on their part. We at least foresee Fear The Walking Dead lasting until we get the upcoming third spin-off within The Walking Dead universe. AMC has been hesitant to share a lot of information on it so far, but that will change most likely over the next several months.
