Today, National Geographic announced that Adams is going to play the role of Major John Glenn in the upcoming series The Right Stuff, based on the Tom Wolfe non-fiction book. Per the official press release, “the first season of The Right Stuff, which uses Wolfe’s book as its starting point, starts at the height of the Cold War. To combat a national sentiment of fear and decline, the U.S. government conceives of NASA’s Project Mercury, igniting a space race with the Soviets and making instant celebrities of a handful of the military’s adrenaline-fueled test pilots. These individuals, who come to be known as the Mercury Seven, are forged into heroes long before they have achieved a single heroic act. At the heart of a historic drama populated by deeply human characters, two arch-rivals — Glenn and Shepard — jockey to be the first man in space.”
Sound like an exciting premise to you? The fascinating thing to us about The Right Stuff is that with each passing season, you’re going to see more and more of the story of the Space Race, an incredible time in American history where achievement, science, and the Cold War all come head-to-head in a variety of complicated ways.
For Adams, without a doubt, this is an interesting acting challenge. Not only are you having to inject yourself into a specific place in time, but you’re also having to play one of the most famous astronauts in American history. While John Glen is very clearly a hero, at the same time he’s also a man. That means that he’s complicated and that he has his fair share of flaws, even if they are not apparent right away to everyone. There’s a lot of personal drama that we are anticipating shown with this series, so we really just hope that it can live up to some of the billing.
If you are a big fan of Suits, rest assured there is plenty of great stuff coming your way as well. The final season is coming to USA a little bit later this year, along with the Jessica Pearson spin-off simply entitled Pearson. With this being the end of the road of Suits, we’re really crossing our fingers that Adams does come back for at least one more appearance as Mike Ross. Without him, this show would not have been what it was. He’s an iconic part of the formula, and to see Mike and Harvey working together one last time would be worthy of throwing our hands in the air and shouting out loud.
