The Amazing Race season 31 episode 8 preview: The U-turn vote

Race 29 finale

Following tonight’s time spent in Switzerland, The Amazing Race season 31 episode 8 will look to up the ante … again. So how will they do it? More than likely, by continuing the rivalry that was at the forefront of the episode tonight!

After Nicole & Victor finished last in the non-elimination leg, it was clear that there was a deep divide between them and Rachel & Elissa. There was also a chance that there could be a U-Turn coming and the sisters could find themselves in a precarious position. Of course, it’s not how you would imagine! For the first time ever on the US version of this show, we’re going to see a U-Turn vote happening in Switzerland where one team ends up getting enough votes to be set back amidst the competition.

Obviously, on the surface, it seems like Rachel & Elissa would be the easy targets given that they’ve burned some bridges and shown that they’re competitive. Yet, there are threats here really all over the board. Tyler & Korey have won a couple of legs now. Meanwhile, the Afghanimals have been really strong and, beyond that, we’ve also seen Team Fun be incredibly strong over the course of this race. There are a lot of different directions that this vote could go.

As for why the show is doing it, a lot of it seems to be tied to the fact that Switzerland is apparently the world’s oldest Democracy — in other words, this was an excuse for the show to do something a little bit crazy. We have seen something a little bit similar to this in the Australian version of the show before, and in all honesty, we don’t really love the idea of it. A part of the of the Race is that you can be a villain and not have great social skills and still make it fairly far. We don’t want to really see that changed too much since we like teams having to jockey around a little bit and actually be able to “run their own race” without all of the other stuff thrown in.

Of course, The Amazing Race isn’t always fair — that’s something that should be clear to anyone who has been watching this series for a long time. Sometimes, it can be a bad cab ride that screws you over, or just a freak accident like an injury. You have to be prepared for just about anything thrown your way.
