What We Do in the Shadows season 2 premiere date hopes

What We Do in the Shadows

If you didn’t know, tonight marks the season 1 finale for FX’s absurd and delightful What We Do in the Shadows. What does it bring you, week in and week out? Think in terms of vampires, chaos, humor, and strong character drama. It’s found a way to adapt the movie into something new and exciting … and also something that is worthy of a little bit more.

We’ll admit that prior to the season renewal announcement, we were shaking in our boots a little bit over the possible future of this show. We are talking here about a production with modest ratings at best, and also one that isn’t getting a whole lot of mainstream attention from influential industry people. Yet, it obviously did enough and the 0.2 rating that the series drew in the 18-49 demographic is a little misleading in the first place. These numbers expand outward when you think about DVR ratings and streaming numbers — i.e. some of the stuff that FX at this point actually looks at. This is a network that, shockingly, is actually trying to be forward-thinking — such a novel concept! If only some other series out there considered doing something similar.

At the time that the show was renewed, FX’s president of original programming Nick Grad had the following to say:

“Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi and [showrunner] Paul Simms have more than delivered on the high expectations of Shadows fans by adapting the cult classic for television and building a passionate base of new and returning fans … We also want to thank the rest of the creative team, including Scott Rudin, Garrett Basch and Eli Bush, and the incredible cast and crew for delivering such a fun and original series, and we look forward to working with them all on season two.”

So when will What We Do in the Shadows season 2 premiere?

At the moment, there is no formal launch date, but 2020 seems to be a fair bet. Because of the timing of the renewal, FX is giving the show enough of an ample opportunity to actually grow and expand from where it was this season. It’s also giving the producers around to turn around new episodes next year, if that’s something that does creatively make sense. We’ve got enough of a body of work from FX to know that they aren’t always beholden to airing their series at the same time of the year every year. After all, we’ve seen them take huge breaks when it comes to seasons of Fargo … though this is obviously a little bit different since we’re talking a little bit here about a show with more of a continuous story. It’s not an anthology; it’s just crazy … though it is also an adaptation of another show that people love.

Once there is more news on a What We Do in the Shadows season 2 premiere date, we’ll have it for you here.
