At the moment, when is the earliest we could expect Criminal Minds season 15 to premiere on CBS? This is the primary focus of this article, but before even diving into the subject, we should begin with one specific reminder: We gotta be realistic here! Obviously, we’d love to say that the series is coming back tomorrow and there was nothing to worry about in regards to waiting, but that’s just not the reality of the situation that we’re looking at.
Instead, what we know is this: Based on the fall schedule released by CBS at upfronts, the earliest that we can anticipate the series coming back is at some point at midseason. Basically, think along the lines of January. That’s a long, brutal wait to go through for a series that has already been filmed, and that is probably why there was a certain part of our brain that, earlier this year, was pleaded for CBS to magically conjure up a way to get the show out there a little bit sooner. Think along the lines of even this summer circa July. The final season is only ten episodes, so it would certainly be possible for the cast and crew to make that happen and deliver in time.

Since CBS isn’t apparently going to do that, there are two different potential premiere dates to circle on your calendar instead, and they start with New Year’s Day. While it may seem a tad unorthodox for the network to premiere a show on January 1, there are actually some shows out there that have scored that premiere date. Typically by the evening of that day, the holiday festivities are largely over and for most people, it’s a chance to get a little bit back into ordinary life. Given that CBS may not care that much about the ratings for the final season in the first place, they may go ahead and premiere the show there anyway.
A more conservative estimate is January 8 — we know that CBS is currently plotting to debut the final season Wednesday nights at midseason, so that’s why we are narrowing things down in such a hyper-specific manner. There’s also this: They want to use Criminal Minds as a midseason hiatus show for either SEAL Team or SWAT, so it has to end in time for those shows to come back.
Basically, you’re going to be waiting for more than six months to see the BAU gang back in action, doing a lot of the great stuff they do best. Let’s just hope that all of this waiting ends up being worthwhile.
