America’s Got Talent season 14: Simon Cowell on judging changes

As we prepare for America’s Got Talent season 14 tomorrow night, there is one thing that we already know will leave a mark: The new judges and the new host. Out are Tyra Banks, Mel B, and Heidi Klum, and in their place are Terry Crews, Gabrielle Union, and Julianne Hough. It’s the biggest change that we’ve seen with this show in quite some time, and it was an interesting move. After all, the ratings for AGT with the old panel were good and we thought that the judges were fine. They had their problems here and there but, in general, they delivered.

So why go ahead and make this change right now? It’s a great question, and apparently, it’s one that originates with the executives over at NBC. Speaking via USA Today, Simon Cowell makes it seem as though the changes in the panel are not really his doing, even though he is an executive producer on the show:

It wasn’t like it wasn’t working. Everyone who’s been on the show over the years, judge or host, has done a brilliant job. It’s just one of those shows where I think occasionally they just like to rotate the panel.

We do think that unlike some other talent-based shows, the specific identity of the judges here doesn’t quite matter as much. Instead, it’s a little bit more about the quality of the acts and their ability to go out on stage and blow everyone’s minds. We do think the judges need to communicate, be open, and understand the tone of the show. If they can do that, and use their Golden Buzzer wisely, we do think that they will be mostly embraced. Julianne Hough in particular already has a good bit of judging experience, having done the role for a time on Dancing with the Stars — meanwhile, her famous brother Derek has been a judge on World of Dance from the very beginning:

We’re going to be seeing a lot of fun stuff hopefully with the new panel this season — let’s hope especially for variety. We want to see more danger acts, some fantastic and innovative dancers, and maybe some performers who we haven’t seen before in any shape or form. The more opportunities that we have to see someone really change what America’s Got Talent is, the better off this show will be. We don’t want it to be the same thing every time — we didn’t necessarily mean that in the form of the judges leading into tomorrow’s premiere, but here we are.
