Doctor Who season 12 spoilers: About the Judoon’s return

There hasn’t exactly been all that much in the way of Doctor Who season 12 news over the past few months, and there are multiple different reasons for it.

A part of this is, of course, intentional — the folks over at the BBC aren’t altogether keen to give a lot of information about their next batch of episodes. For starters, new episodes aren’t going to air until next year, which gives them a lot of time to release more information next year. There’s also another reason for it: The creative team tries their best to hide as many spoilers as possible. They like the idea of these episodes being at least a relative surprise, with no major news getting out about most of them in advance.

Let’s go ahead now to getting to some of the information that did come out last week, and that includes the arrival or (re-arrival) of the Judoon back into the show’s universe. These are characters who have appeared on the show in the past (notably with David Tennant), and the return of these rhino-like characters do give the show an added touch of nostalgia. It’s also a dramatic shift from Chris Chibnall’s first season as showrunner, where he opted against bringing you a parade of classic creatures and characters in favor of introducing new mythology and parts of the world. He eventually changed that slightly by featuring the Daleks in the New Year’s Special, but this seems to be a great expansion and commitment towards adding a little bit more nostalgia to the mix.

In a statement discussing the arrival of the Judoon further, here is what Chibnall had to say:

“The Judoon are storming back into Doctor Who in full force, and the streets of Gloucester aren’t safe. If anyone has anything to hide, confess now. The Judoon are taking no prisoners, and will stop at nothing to fulfill their mission! The whole team on Doctor Who are delighted and scared in equal measure to welcome them back: one of many treats we’ve got in store for viewers next series. And we’re over the moon (with Judoon), to be welcoming the wondrous Neil Stuke as guest star. We can’t wait to show you what happens when his path crosses with the Thirteenth Doctor.”

What else do we want?

We’re always going to champion the return of the Cyberman to the series, but more so than just advocating for the return of one classic character or another, we just want this show to remain mostly about imagination and allowing viewers to feel like kids again, watching these new worlds and imagining regardless of the danger presented, that they were a part of them. Doctor Who is in many ways best when it is universal, and where viewers of all ages can watch it and ultimately feel like they are in the same boat, feeling largely the same thing.
