This Is Us season 4 spoilers: Boss on big character ‘restarts’ ahead

This Is Us season 4 is going to premiere a little bit later this fall on NBC, and at this point, we know that some characters are in exciting places. With Kate and Toby, for example, they’re moving forward as new parents. Meanwhile, for Randall and Beth, they’re moving to a new city in hopes of making their lives a little bit easier. Beth’s going to have what she wants, while at the same time, Randall’s career is going to be easier. (Just think in terms of the commute!)

While these are some of the more obvious restarts at the heart of season 4, rest assured there will be others — after all, restarts are going to be at the heart of the entire season! That’s something that executive producer Dan Fogelman recently made clear, as a part of a new interview with none other than Entertainment Weekly:

“Restarts for everybody … And midpoints. I think it’s going to be very ambitious and sprawling in terms of how it plays with time. Many of our characters are in the middle of their stories, and that’s a point where characters are opening up to new things and new things are starting. That becomes a very exciting period for almost all of the characters, and for some of them, maybe a very scary period in terms of how fraught their storylines are.”

With the amount of emphasis that is being put on the word “middle” within this particular interview, it’s fair to speculate once more on the idea of This Is Us season 6 being the final one. NBC has already renewed the show until then and because of that, they’ve given Fogelman and his entire team the time in order to establish if season 6 could be the endpoint. We don’t think that they will necessarily keep this show on the air longer than it needs to be, but if they start to feel like there’s more to be told here, maybe a season 7 is still possible. For now, the #1 thing we’re hoping for is simply that we see growth, progression, and a glimmer or two of happiness.

Ultimately, we know that there are still some trials ahead — with one of the biggest ones coming in the flash-forwards. That’s where we are seeing Rebecca in a very different place in her life, one in which she may be at the end of her life. We don’t think that we will be inching close to all of the necessary information in season 4, but we are at least inching closer to it.

In the short-term, there are some other storylines that we could get more information on — including what’s going on with Kevin and his future as a father. Also, getting to see more of Jack and Rebecca’s past.
