Chicago Med season 5 premiere date hopes; future without Connor, Ava
It goes without saying, though, that when Chicago Med season 5 does in fact air, it’s going to feel totally different than any other season of the NBC series before it. We don’t know how you can say anything otherwise when you consider the departure of Colin Donnell. He’s been a part of the show since the first season and Connor Rhodes has, fundamentally, been a key part of all of the stories. Norma Kuhling’s only been around the past two years, but Ava Bekker as a character has certainly made an impact in her own right. It’s hard to imagine where the show is going to go without them … but they’re going to have to do some experimenting.

Chicago Med season 5 will formally premiere this fall (most likely late September/early October), in the same timeslot that we’ve come to expect over the past year — Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. There was a time when we did wonder whether or not pairing off all three One Chicago series together would really work but since that time, our feelings have obviously changed. Chicago Med managed to be basically even with season 3 in the 18-49 demographic and was actually up dramatically in total viewers.
Story-wise, replacing Connor and Ava is obviously going to be a huge priority. By around July, we’re expecting that some of the first casting news is going to surface. There will probably be a couple of new series regulars cast, especially since we lost a major one at the start of this year in Dr. Sarah Reese, as well. It’s rather crazy when you think about it — there are only a small handful of cast members who were a part of the original version of Chicago Med when it was first conceived who are still around now. There has been a lot of flux, but this probably is somewhat similar to a real hospital as well — this is the sort of place where there would be turnover, given that people may inevitably find better jobs or realize that they just want to be in another place.
Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see whether or not Chicago Med ratings-wise is able to survive losing some of its key players. We know that there is such a solid backbone here that, in due time, we do think that they will weather the storm. There may just be a speed bump or two along the way.
