Call the Midwife season 9 Christmas Special heading to Outer Hebrides

Call the Midwife season 8

While you’re not going to get the Call the Midwife season 9 Christmas Special until (well, go figure) Christmas, we’ve got some more news all about it now!

Today, the BBC released a first-look photo from the upcoming event, which features some of the main characters surrounded by sheep. It is absolutely indicative of a major change in setting for some of these characters, as they are heading off to a place very much different from Poplar — the Outer Hebrides. For those who aren’t from the UK who are watching this series, this is an island chain off the West Coast of Scotland; this special should allow you an opportunity to explore a further sense of Scottish geography and, in turn, allow us to get to see some more exciting adventures for some of these characters. We do love how this show does at times embrace geography and show you all sorts of wonderful parts of the world.

For some more news as to what’s coming in terms of the story of this special, be sure to check out the official Call the Midwife season 9 Christmas Special synopsis:

This year’s Christmas special will see the team take their work to the Outer Hebrides. Led by Mother Mildred, they embark on a trip to the remote yet idyllic Scottish island, where residents have a desperate need for nurses and midwives. Exposed to the elements, they operate in bleak conditions with limited access to water and electricity to help their patients, just in time to reconvene in Poplar for Christmas.

Ultimately, we’re going to have a great opportunity during this special to bear witness to some beautiful stuff — we’re hoping to have a chance to see the midwives and nurses whether the elements and try to make a lot out of a little. We’ve seen many of these characters go completely to the other side of the world, but this may feel like a totally different world, as well just because of the lack of modern conveniences. This will be a Christmas Special that really gives you a great sense of everyone’s better angels — the ability for these people to help each other in hard times, and to make sure that there is constantly a glimmer of hope even within what is otherwise the darkness.

Rest assured, we are tremendously excited to see what is coming throughout this Special — we’re hoping for something incredibly powerful, a special that is going to be remembered as one of the best, most emotional things that we’ve seen the series offer through the years. The problem is going to be quite simple: Waiting until December in order to see it. The rest of Call the Midwife season 9 will air starting in January (most likely) in the UK, and then a little bit later in the spring in America.
