American Idol season 17 finale: Is Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy winner?
While we personally predicted Alejandro to be the winner, we weren’t altogether confident about it. As a matter of fact, we said that we felt around 45% confident about it. The test tonight was really about who was there, voting live and in the moment. It didn’t matter so much about YouTube views, Instagram followers, or anything else. American Idol is basically a reset at this point.

While there’s a lot of filler in this show, at least they didn’t make you wait until the very end to learn who was in third place!
So, let’s go now to the results…
In third place was … Madison VanDenburg! She had a good showing tonight, but this felt like the most likely result. We didn’t think that she had the fan base to carry through tonight, even though she’s a great singer with an excellent voice and still a lot of potential. With the right team around her, she could go far.
As for the winner, it is … Laine Hardy! We can’t say that we’re totally shocked, given that he is going to benefit heavily from winning this show and he will be a great ambassador for the brand. Also, and we’ve said this before, but Alejandro really doesn’t need to win this show to be successful. He’s going to be just fine — just look at Adam Lambert as a fine example of that! The best thing for him is going to be finding the right people to work with moving forward from here on out.
As for Laine, he will be a good person to have within sort of the overall Disney umbrella. He plays really well to family crowds and is going to be able to deliver someone to a lot of people out there who is appealing, likable, and they’ll want to root for in the future. He’ll also benefit from the exposure of the show and could be a significant teen star. Is it possible that this is a final where everyone wins? Sure, and we’re not even trying to be hokey here when we say it.
