Is Lucifer charting well early to a season 5 renewal?

Lucifer

At the moment, we’re not at a point just yet where a Lucifer season 5 is absolutely happening on Netflix. Yet, there are some signs that have us feeling hopeful.

We’ve seen a lot of viewership data through the first week and a half, whether it be social metrics or even some new Parrot Analytics numbers (via Business Insider) that show that Lucifer is more in-demand in the form of impressions than any other show that is currently out there across streaming TV. All of this is encouraging. The fact that Lucifer fans are coming out to play and watching the show in big numbers — and talking about it in equally-big ways — is impressive. Of course, we wish that there was a way to see actual viewership and retention, because there is specific data that is hard to get unless you actually are one of the big bosses over at Netflix.

For now, though, our general takeaway is this: Lucifer was worth saving at Netflix and its proving itself worthy of the time and investment — hopefully, they’ll feel the same moving into a season 5.

So, what’s the concern at the moment? Is there one? The only thing that we can say at the moment is that it makes perfect sense for Lucifer to have such a great performance in the early going — just remember for a moment that this show has a legion of diehard Lucifans who are ready and willing to support the show at every turn. It made sense for the viewership to be huge for the first week and a half; the real test will come over the next few weeks as some more viewers start to get on board with just how good this show really is.

Let’s go back now to something that we’ve been saying for a while… Netflix didn’t just save Lucifer for the sake of having one season of it. They obviously felt confident enough to pick it up and to go through that whole process — which isn’t obviously the easiest thing in the world to do. If they were willing to do this, you have to go ahead and believe that they’ve been hoping and planning for a season 5 — we just have to wait and see if that is going to actually happen.

As we’ve said for a while, Netflix still has many weeks to make up their mind — of course, the quicker that they do make a decision, the faster that the writers can really start planning things out and production dates can be set.
