Sela Ward leaving FBI, will not be series regular for season 2

FBI

When FBI season 2 comes on the air, it’s going to be without one of its most-notable season 1 characters.

In a new post on Instagram, Sela Ward confirmed that last night’s episode is going to be the final one for her. While it may seem a little bit surprising on the surface that a freshman series would lose one of its series regulars so soon into its run, Ward (per Deadline) only had a one-year deal to be a part of the show. A part of the plan here may have always been to have the Once and Again/CSI: NY alum on board the show to help boost its credibility in the early going, and then move the series along in a different direction entering season 2. There is obviously going to need to be a big change at the top, with Ward’s Special Agent in Charge Dana Mosier having tendered her resignation at the end of the season 1 finale.

Following that move, we, of course, wanted to think that there was some sort of twist or turn that could have allowed her to find her way back to getting this spot but, in the end, it seems cemented now that she is going to be saying goodbye. This is something that we probably need to get accustomed to with the Dick Wolf – FBI franchise, mostly because it’s something that we’ve grown accustomed to with his Law & Order and One Chicago franchises. Characters leave and leave often, with a part of it just having to do with the reasonably-fluid nature of some of these jobs. While there are a number of lifers, people who stick around one position until retirement, there are other people who often choose to flutter around between positions. Not every character makes it there in the end.

If you missed it, earlier today CBS confirmed that FBI season 2 will be premiering on CBS this fall in its 9:00 p.m. Eastern timeslot. (You can check out the full fall schedule over at the link here.) We are still going to end up seeing FBI: Most Wanted on the schedule eventually, but for now it appears to be more of a midseason entry. It’s a little tough to say anymore regarding its own future without getting more of a sense of how it could play into FBI and if the two shows could work in tandem with a reasonable amount of regularity.
