The Voice song analysis: Maelyn Jarmon, Dexter Roberts, Kim Cherry, more

The Voice

Tonight on The Voicethe top 8 are going to do what they can in order to fight their way to the finale and prove that they’re worthy. Below, you can get some of our pre-show analysis of some of the songs that they’re doing! Consider this almost the pre-game for the episode tonight, and if you want to get our take on a lot of these performances after the fact, we’ll have a video for you a little bit later tonight. Rod Stokes, “Go High on That Mountain” – We knew that at some point, someone was going to do a religious song. It’s a bit of a staple on the show at this point! It’s basically Kelly’s best chance of getting Rod through to the finale.

Shawn Sounds, “A Song for You” – It’s an overdone song, but it’s a gorgeous song and Shawn’s going to kill it tonight. He’s one of the few people out there who can probably do it proper justice.

Andrew Sevener, “Long Haired Country Boy” – Don’t really get this song at all. It doesn’t feel right for who we’ve known Andrew to be, unless he’s got some reall cool flip that he is planning to do with it. This is a risk, but one that may not end up paying off.

Maelyn Jarmon, “Stay” – Another powerful song that Maelyn can use to show off her voice. Keep the arrangement nice and subdued and everyone is going to be happy.

Dexter Roberts, “Here Without You” – The song makes almost no sense to a guy who is a straight-laced country singer, but we’ll admit that we’ve got a personal sweet spot for the song.

Gyth Rigdon, “God Bless the USA” – Well, this is basically the most playing-to-the-country crowd song possible. The sentimentality behind much of the lyrics may be nice, but it’s also not a great fit for a guy who felt so current.

Kim Cherry, “Together Again” – It may be another older song for Kim, but we appreciate that Kim is doing something a little bit different. Also, Janet Jackson songs are surprisingly not covered that much on singing shows.

Carter Lloyd Horne, “Take Me to Church” – It’s a little strange that none of Blake’s country guys are actually doing songs that we’d consider to be firmly in their wheelhouse. We do love this song, though, so Carter’s got a shot with it.
