Modern Family season 11: Premiere date hopes for final season

If you haven’t heard the bittersweet news just yet, Modern Family was renewed already for a season 11. However, it’s also out there that this is going to be the final one. It’s weird to say goodbye to this show — on a personal level, it came out at right about the same time we started working in the TV industry, and we’ve seen it really grow and spread its wings over the past several years. We’ve watched it become effectively one of the biggest comedies of this era. It’s a syndication beast, so we do know that even following the end of its run, it’s going to live on in a number of other forms for people to discover it.

Since the series’ future fate is already decided, there’s no real need to focus on that all that much here. Instead, let’s ponder the following question instead — when will the final season of the show premiere?

At the moment, ABC has not sent out to us in the media world a final-season premiere date just yet, and they probably won’t for at least another month or two. There’s no immediate rush with premiere dates, given that very few people are going to actually go ahead and mark a date on the calendar right now. ABC will probably announce the timeslot for the final season next week at upfronts, not that we really imagine that they’re going to change up when the show is airing. After all, is there really any reason for them to shake that up at all? We really can’t see it, especially since this is the final opportunity coming up for the show to be used as a valuable lead-in to something else. It’s boosted a number of series over time, with black-ish being perhaps the most famous example. (As of late, it’s helped out Single Parents, a show that we already know is coming back for another run.)

As for what’s coming in the final season, we don’t really think that Modern Family really needs to think too much about it. They just need to deliver stories that are funny (of course), but also real and relatable to what people are dealing with today. That means stories about being parents (and grandparents), and also about aging and dealing with their weird, crazy, and at times divisive world. We’re hoping that through the final season there are some opportunities to sprinkle in appearances from some familiar faces that we’ve seen over the years, mostly as a way to nod at the show’s legacy and what it’s really meant to the TV industry at large. So few shows have accomplished what it has and Modern Family does deserve the opportunity to have a farewell tour — or at least that’s what we would call it if this was sports.
