There is also another part of the season 3 equation that needs to be considered outside of the obvious ratings stats, and that is the simple notion of what may or may not be resolved during the upcoming May 22 finale. There are those finales out there that like to tie everything up in a neat, satisfying way, and then there are those other ones that tend to detonate the whole world and then leave you over the summer to pick up some of the pieces while generating lots of conversation with your friends. Ultimately, we haven’t gotten a sense that we’re getting the biggest cliffhanger of all time at the end of season 2, but it does feel like there are still going to be a few questions left open if we get that opportunity to have another season. That’s where some of that added uncertainty comes. By the time the finale airs, we may know a little bit more of the show’s future fate, so let’s cross our fingers and hope for a little bit of news in the positive direction.
For now, here’s the tease we got on the finale via Toni Trucks, who plays Lisa Davis on the series (be prepared for an excellent episode from her tonight!), in a new interview with TVLine:
Oh, the finale…. This has been, for my money, such a beautifully heart-wrenching season. We’ve really delved so deep into each of the characters, which I guess is the luxury of having a second season. I think the finale is going to definitely leave some uncertainty about where we all are and where we’re all going, but also seeing how we can all really band together in tragedy.
Tragedy has absolutely been a theme for season 2 as a whole. In the early going, we saw some touches of that courtesy of what happened to Alana and that’s carried over now to Brett Swan taking his own life, Clay’s near-death experience, and also Ray’s struggles and what could be coming with that. Life as a member of a SEAL Team is not easy — and not all of your demons come out of the ground of the battlefield. Sometimes, they are battles of the mind or emotional hardships that await you on the other side of your front door when you come home.
No matter how the season ends, we expect something that is poignant, and hopefully well-suited to the current direction of the story. It should echo the themes and discussions that we’ve seen throughout the better part of the past several months.
