Madam Secretary season 5 finale video: Elizabeth prepares an announcement

Tomorrow night, the Madam Secretary season 5 finale is here, and it’s pretty clear that this one could be history-making. At some point over the course of the episode, we could see one Elizabeth McCord announce her run for President! It’s certainly something that she’s been waiting to do and beyond that, it’s certainly something that she’s been waiting to see.

In one way, you can view the sneak peek below via CBS as her trying to do just about everything within her power to get all of her necessary ducks in a row. She, President Dalton, and Russell want to make sure that she is prepared so that her Presidential campaign announcement gets all of the attention that it deserves — beyond that, she also wants to make sure that when she does announce, she does so without unnecessary distractions. That’s what Dalton and Russell are worried about when it comes to the idea of Elizabeth testifying before Congress in front of a committee. If the question goes a little awry, it could shake up the tone before her big announcement. Yet, Bess is confident … she’s pretty much always confident without being cocky. She understands her job and also is ready for anything that comes along with it.

At the end of the sneak peek, Elizabeth claims that in the morning, she will announce her resignation from the State Department, the sort of thing that does clear the way for a Presidential run … or at least it does in theory. Given that this is a show where drama is pretty much paramount at every turn, you shouldn’t be too shocked that some curveballs are going to come into play, including one in Geneva that may have her questioning if stepping away from her position is the right decision at all.

This is an episode that could be, for Elizabeth, about duty — duty to her country, duty to herself, and also duty to those who work around her. Can Elizabeth really make the next step in the way in which she’s planned? There are so many questions worth wondering about now, both in terms of what’s happening at the end of this season and also how the end result of it could shake up season 6. Take, for example, what happens with much of the State Department staff if she does leave and pursue the highest office. How many of them will we get a chance to see on the regular?
