The Grey’s Anatomy – Station 19 crossover event is going to debut with a splash on ABC come Thursday, May 2, and judging from the new promo below, we’re going to be in for quite the colossal treat … but also quite the difficult story. There is a natural excitement that comes from seeing these two shows together in a more substantial way than we’ve seen for most of the season, but then you remember why they are together. Typically, there aren’t a bunch of firefighters at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital unless it’s bad news. (The only exception we can think of is when Ben shows up to see Bailey.)
In the video below, you can see that it is Fire Chief Lucas Ripley’s life that hangs in the balance, and that puts all of Station 19 on edge. This is a guy who has developed close ties to many of them, but especially Vic … and apparently nobody knows where she is. That causes another pretty-clear issue, as some people are going to be intent to find her. Lucas is among them, but the problem is that if he leaves the hospital too early, his heart could stop.
As you can see just from this description alone, we’re entering a very tenuous situation in this crossover where one wrong decision could alter the course of multiple characters’ lives.

After reading all of this, it’s fair if you’re wondering why all of this seems very Station 19 heavy. A big part of the reason for that is probably just because it’s easier for the narrative push to be related to those characters than it is for some of the people of Grey’s Anatomy to be over at the firehouse in need of something. There was actually an opportunity to do that earlier this season with Catherine’s party and the fire…
Rest assured, there is going to be a big storyline for Meredith within the first part of the crossover, but it may have more to do with something that she’s working on individually than anything that’s happening with the Station 19 characters turning up. Doesn’t it feel like time for someone to throw a wrench into what’s been a pretty wonderful life for Dr. Grey? It feels that way. Right when everything is going great for her — she’s got a healthy relationship with DeLuca and she just told her kids about it — something is going to come up that could impact her professional future. Whether or not there are some personal implications there, as well, remains to be seen.
