Colin Donnell confirms Chicago PD exit, thanks viewers

Chicago Med season 3 episode 8 - Connor Rhodes

Mere minutes after the news came out today about Colin Donnell’s departure from Chicago Medthe actor has confirmed the news himself.

If you missed it, we talk a little bit further about the departures of Donnell below, to go along with Norma Kuhling and also Jon Seda from Chicago PD. Also, take a look at our One Chicago playlist for more and subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube.

In a series of posts on Twitter, Donnell (who has been with the show from the very first season) offered up some thoughts on his departure — while also thanking all of the fans who made his run on the show happen in the first place:

Sorry to say that this is true.

I love my #ChicagoMed #OneChicago family dearly.

And a special thank you to all the fans that have made these last four seasons so amazing.

It’s been an honor to be a part of such a great trio of shows and in the @WolfEnt family.

I know that there’s great things coming for Season 5 and I can’t wait to see what they are along with all you fans.

Obviously, the idea of losing Colin from Chicago Med is sad … and also significant. Connor Rhodes is one of the series’ most-important characters, and beyond that the One Chicago world at large has become one of flux. Chicago Med just lost the character of Sarah Reese at the start of this season, and with Kuhling also departing, it feels clear that there’s going to need to be a massive shake-up over the course of the summer. The same thing is probably going to happen over on Chicago PD, given that Seda is gone and they never actually replaced Elias Koteas, who played Al Olinsky for the first handful of episodes.

As for how Chicago Med will write out the Connor and Ava characters, the jury is still out … but it does feel like a reasonable idea would be for them to simply just have the characters depart together. Given their romantic history, that’s something that could be in the cards. The door could also be left open in order to see more of the two of them coming up if the opportunity does present itself. That’s always there for a number of actors in the Dick Wolf universe — it’s something that Monica Raymund chose to do at the start of Chicago Fire in order to give a little bit more closure to the Dawson character’s story.

There are a few more episodes left of Chicago Med this season, and that should give us as viewers a chance to really see the end of this story properly develop.
