NBC moves The Voice back an hour, The Village up on Tuesday

The Voice

After surveying the ratings field for the past couple of weeks, NBC is deciding to make some changes to their Tuesday lineup.

The first thing worth noting is that as we move forward, The Voice is going to come on an hour later at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, rather than the 8:00 p.m. that we’ve seen the show at for all of its Tuesday shows this season. Meanwhile, you’re also going to see The Village moved up to 8:00 p.m. Eastern, where it will now lead off the night. New Amsterdam is going to be keeping the same timeslot that it’s had for the bulk of this season.

So what is the reason for this change? A good bit of it comes down to performance. Moving back The Voice gives the show a chance to get better ratings, as it’s harder in the spring to get big numbers at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. Also, The Village is heavily time-shifted, so a lot of people are going to just DVR it regardless of if they are watching it at 8:00 or an hour later.

Then, there’s also this: The ratings for New Amsterdam have not been altogether great since the end of This Is Us a little bit earlier this season. Because of that, we foresee this move as a way for NBC to try and shore up some of the numbers for New Amsterdam. It already has a season 2 renewal, so they may want to make sure that it doesn’t end up losing a good bit of steam in some of the weeks ahead.

Beyond just this, we don’t think that the move really has that much of a bearing on either The Village or The Voice — it may hurt the live ratings of the former slightly, but we don’t think its renewal odds are going to live or die because of this and this alone. We foresee this mostly as a move to keep the live numbers for The Voice as strong as possible, while also lending a helping hand to New Amsterdam in order to ensure that it doesn’t end up getting hit hard in the ratings before it gets around to the second season.
