The Gifted canceled at Fox; could season 3 air elsewhere?
According to a report from Deadline, Fox has canceled the X-Men franchise series after two seasons on the air. This move isn’t a surprising one, mostly because of the fact that the ratings for season 2 were among the lowest of any Monday-Thursday drama series on the network. There wasn’t really any sign that the network was looking to bring it back, and following the merger of Disney with many Fox assets — including all of the X-Men properties — there wasn’t really any value for them to keep the show around. It’s something that a lot of people expected just for that reason alone, but the small ratings for season 2 made the decision a little bit easier.
Now, the question that you’re left to wonder is whether or not a show like The Gifted could end up finding a home somewhere else on the air — and there’s at least a small hope for that. While the aforementioned site notes that no formal conversations have happened, you could argue that Hulu (which Disney owns a large stake in) and the upcoming Disney+ streaming service would both make viable candidates for the show. Hulu already has some other superhero properties, though, and Disney+ is planning many offshoots of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While The Gifted is quality television, it’s fair to wonder if either network really needs this show.

As for other network homes, you can argue that FX could be an interesting candidate to bring the show back, if for no other reason than that they’ve already got another superhero show in Legion. Yet, we do still wonder in general if Disney wants to let a lot of their X-Men properties now coast off into the sunset so they can reboot all of it and move it slowly and surely into the MCU as totally-new iterations. We’re not sure how they would do this given that characters like Deadpool are so popular in their current form, but it does add another layer of intrigue to a situation that has been complicated for a really long time now.
If there is some more news on the future of The Gifted, we figure that we’ll hear about it at some point over the next two months. There’s only so long that you can keep actors under contract before they have to move on.
For other cancellation news…
Fox also canceled tonight Rel after one season. The freshman comedy struggled in the numbers, and we can’t say that we’re altogether shocked about this news in the slightest.
