The upcoming Grey’s Anatomy – Station 19 crossover event is going to be coming up on ABC on May 2, and judging from the first photo about it, we’re going to be seeing some characters on a major collision course.
So, what’s happening? The photo above (from the Grey’s Anatomy portion of the event) indicates that both Andy and Ben are back at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, doing just about whatever they can in order to help one of their own in danger. This photo’s a pretty clear indication that these two characters are not the ones in danger at the center of this episode, and that it’s going to be Maggie who is responsible for trying to treat whoever’s come in.
The merit of the Grey’s Anatomy – Station 19 crossover at this point is that we’ve really gotten to know a number of firefighters at this point. Because of that, we do think that there are tremendously higher stakes than there were back when this spin-off first premiered on ABC last year. If someone is in danger, we’re immediately concerned over it — we certainly know within the greater Shondaland universe that characters can die. Beyond that, they can die in a wide array of different ways. Just look at some Grey’s Anatomy finales for some prime examples of that.

Another important part of this episode is the timing of it. If this crossover event served as the finale for either show, we’d probably feel a larger tinge of disappointment as a result of it. We don’t want either finale to be short-changed by having to focus on two different shows at the same time. Because we’re getting 25 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy this season as opposed to the typical 24, we almost consider this to be a bonus. It’s just a chance for some other fun content that’s a little different than anything we’ve seen before. Commercially, it’s also a great opportunity to see Station 19 get a generous ratings bump as we get a tad closer to the end of the season. Neither show technically has been renewed just yet — while we think that both will, there’s never anything wrong with getting that extra assist so close to the big finale coming on the air.
