Better Call Saul season 5 filming officially underway!
In a post on Twitter earlier this week, executive producer Peter Gould confirmed the news with a shot of one of the first slates of the season. Production is going to be going on in the greater Albuquerque area for the better part of the next several months, with the goal here being obviously to deliver a season that matches the greatness of the first four. While we think that it was hard to compare Better Call Saul to Breaking Bad at first, we feel like over time it’s shown itself to be a series worthy of that legacy and absolutely worthy of all of the attention it has received — even if it remains quite under-appreciated from awards shows along the way.
For this particular season, you will see the origin story of Saul Goodman himself — Jimmy McGill has opted to take on this name after being reinstated as a lawyer, which means that he is moving towards the same crooked-lawyer persona that you saw play out in Breaking Bad. This could be perhaps the most challenging season for star Bob Odenkirk, largely because he’s having to watch the slow descension of this once-likable character into someone else. There’s a lot to like about Jimmy McGill; there’s not anywhere near as much to like about Saul Goodman. Maybe this is why Gene is so necessarily, even if the appearances that we get from him are brief; he presents the rare opportunity to break away from the rest of the series and make you think as though redemption for this guy is possible years down the road. We’re sure that we will see him … but we’re certainly not sure of how much.
New episodes of Better Call Saul are still many months away — think nine months at least. Even though filming may be going on right now, the plan is for AMC to not premiere this latest batch until 2020. Given that there is no indication out there that this is the final season, we do at least think that there’s hope for a little more craziness … and also hopefully a little bit more closure.
