Shadowhunters season 3 episode 17 ratings; Freeform show comparisons

Shadowhunters season 3 spoilers

The latest Shadowhunters season 3 episode 17 ratings are online, and as is often the case when dabbling within this world, the news that we’re reporting today is somewhat bittersweet.

After all, last night’s “Heavenly Fire” did drop to a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and right around 305,000 viewers — its lowest live output in the latter in almost a year. Yet, consider some context here, most notably that the show was up against not only The Voice and American Idol, but also the college basketball title game over on CBS. It was larger-than-usual competition and the lower output doesn’t put too much of a dent in the ratings averages for the season.

Here’s where Shadowhunters viewers have a right to be annoyed more — comparing the average ratings of this show in total viewers to some others that they’ve got around their schedule. To date, Shadowhunters season 3 is pulling over 370,000 live viewers weekly. That’s a better total average than we’re seeing from Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, Good Trouble, or The Bold Type. Freeform’s shown a commitment to a couple of those shows already; the fate of The Perfectionists is not altogether clear.

Obviously, we recognize fully that the reasons why Shadowhunters was canceled go so far beyond just how it performed on one US network and more what was going on with Netflix amidst international studio negotiations. It’s complicated, though we do still wonder if things would be slightly different if the live ratings were higher. It’s still hard to really focus on that and play the what-if game now.

We’ve said this before and we’ll probably say it about a dozen or so more times before the end of the season — while live ratings are great and it’s nice to trumpet good news when it comes in, we think the future for Shadowhunters is more than just viewer measurements from an outdated system that isn’t even gauging international performance. It’s more about a large-scale footprint and building a brand that is unforgettable — and we think that the fandom has already done that. If there’s ever to be something more within this world (which is far from guaranteed), one of the best ways in which for that to happen is for the collective fandom to decide that they aren’t going anywhere. It’s about visibility and having a future home realize that this is a brand that they want because the viewers will elevate them. They will make them feel special and loved for picking up the show.

For now, those decisions on the future are in the hands of executives; as viewers of Shadowhunters, really the best thing that you can do is keep talking, keep tweeting, and keep hoping for the best.
