What are the chances of The Orville season 3 happening at Fox, at least based on the latest info swimming around out there? We’re back with yet another edition of our ongoing Renewal Debate series and at this point, it should be clear that we’re zeroing in on all things regarding Fox’s fantastic space series. We’ve seen many a great voyage and met everyone from Kaylon to a woman within a time capsule. Yet, we still want more, and we’ve got a feeling that you still do, as well.

If you enjoy this one, remember to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube; also, we’ve got an Orville playlist that should make your search for great videos even easier.
Unfortunately, the truth here is that, for now, there is no guarantee of more. All we can hope for is that by the time the finale airs later this month, the network’s given us word one way or another. Either allow us to have a celebratory parade in our brain our put us out of our misery.
Within the rest of this piece, we want to do our best to lay out Fox’s case for either bringing The Orville back or canceling it outright — following that, we’ve also got a poll for you to share some more of your thoughts, as well!
The case for a renewal – The #1 argument here that you can make is a fairly simple one: Keep great science fiction on the air. Fox has here one of their most-popular shows these days among people on social media, it has a dedicated critical community, and it also does have a generous tax credit already lined up for another batch of episodes.
We think that there is a general sense of awareness that The Orville is not the sort of show that will last forever. A lot of space shows don’t even make it to two seasons! (Just as Firefly.) Nonetheless, creatively there is still a lot left in the tank and this is still a show that could grow over time with the right promotion during the off months.
The case for cancellation – The obvious one is that the ratings aren’t great. If you take out the NFL-inflated premiere, it’s basically averaging a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic at best, which puts it on the lower end of the show’s series eligible for another season on the air. (Gotham is ending, after all, and Proven Innocent is sure to be canceled.) The other issue here is mostly that this is an expensive show to make in between the visual effects and the longer run time per episode compared to some of the other shows that the network has no the air. This stuff stacks up dollar bills on top of dollar bills.
What will Fox do?
Our feeling is that we’ll probably get a season 3 renewal, but we wouldn’t be shocked if it was announced as the final season in advance. We think Fox needs to give this show a chance for some closure, and they’re probably best to not anger the fans.
